Apologies and Then Some

Good afternoon everyone. I hope everyone has been well.

I wanted to send my deepest apologies to you, Bayside Scoopers, for my absence. I had been in the middle of Mid-Term Exam week and had to devote some extra time to my studies. However, I am back so lets put the pedal to the metal. So please enjoy these two stories.

Tasty Treat Monday

Rice Pudding

One of the best snacks to eat that's good for the heart and great for those with a sweet tooth is the Famous Rice Pudding. The only downside to making Rice Pudding is the cook time, but for those that know how great is tastes, that slight detail is irrelevant.

You Will Need:

  • 1/2 gallon of milk
  • 1 cup of white sugar
  • 1 cup of uncooked rice
  • 3 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1/4 cup of  condensed milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Ground Cinnamon, to taste
  • Time
Directions:
  1. In a large saucepan over medium-low heat, combine 1/2 gallon milk, sugar and rice. Simmer, covered, 1 hour, stirring frequently. Remove pan from heat and let rest 10 minutes.
  2. In a small bowl, combine eggs, 1/4 cup milk, salt and vanilla. Stir into rice mixture and return pot to low heat, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes. Pour into a 9x13 inch dish and cover with plastic wrap, folding back the corners to allow the steam to escape.
  3. When pudding has cooled to room temperature, remove plastic wrap and sprinkle surface of pudding with cinnamon. Cover tightly (with fresh wrap) and refrigerate 8 hours or overnight before serving.
I hope you can enjoy this. I know I have. Around Salisbury, Dayton's on Snow Hill Road has the best rice pudding but around my way my mother makes the BEST of the BEST rice pudding. It is shame I have to wait till Thanksgiving to have another taste.

Harlem Shake

Craze of 2013

I remember when the Harlem Shake first hit the nation. The original Harlem shake was dance created by a skinny man from New York City named Albert Boyce aka Al. B.. This dance originally was a raw, technical, fluid, frenetic dance. Al. B was an avid street dancer; he would always try to explore different moves to update his routines. He would be the halftime show at street basketball games at Rucker Park entertaining the crowd with his array of original moves. Before the term "Harlem Shake" was coined the dance by Al. B around Harlem was known as "The Al. B."

When his mother, Saudra Boyce, age 69 and still lives in Harlem, caught glimpse of the dance she described it as "He would dance, and twist his shoulders. [He spent much of his life] to every rhythm and every beat, and every song." Through his devotion to his dance, Al. B. created his own style that became popular at the park. The "Al. B." then became the "Harlem Shake" forever.

Albert Boyce died at the age of 43 in 2006 but his dance lives on in another light. the Harlem Shake now is a free-for-all dance with a electric-techno rhythm. People love to get down to the new Harlem Shake but the roots of its origin still lie within the dance.

Please enjoy the different takes of the Harlem Shake

Tasty Treat Monday

Addition to The Family

Hello everyone. I hope everybody enjoyed his/her weekend. For this Tasty Treat Monday I have a new addition to the our vault, dirt pudding. Have anyone heard of the treat white trash? It's a mixture of pretzels. cereal, and nuts covered in white chocolate. White trash makes a great treat but dirt pudding is the icing on the cake. Its a great party snack for the kids especially during the halloween season.

You will need:
  • 2 3.5oz packages of instant French Vanilla pudding mix
  • 3 cups of milk
  • 1 cup of confectioners' sugar
  • 2 8oz package of cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup of butter, softened
  • 1 12oz container frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • 1 14oz package of chocolate cream-filled sandwich cookies, crushed (Oreo Cookies)

Directions:

  1. Whisk French vanilla pudding mix with milk in a large bowl until softly set, about 2 minutes. Pudding will thicken as it stands. Cream confectioners' sugar, cream cheese, and butter in a separate bowl until smooth and creamy. Stir cream cheese mixture into pudding until thoroughly combined; gently fold frozen whipped topping into the mixture.
  2. Place half the cookie crumbs into the bottom of an 9x12-inch dish; retain remaining crumbs for topping. Spread the filling over the layer of cookie crumbs and top with remaining crumbs, covering completely. Chill for at least 30 minutes.
Enjoy the dirt pudding.

Read: Matthew 5:1-14
God's Lighthouse

The Mission Point Lighthouse was built in 1870 on a peninsula in Northern Michigan to warn ships of sand bars and rocky shores along Lake Michigan. That lighthouse got its name from another kind of lighthouse, a mission church, which was built 31 years earlier.

In 1839, Rev. Peter Dougherty answered the call to become pastor of a church in Old Mission that was made up of Native Americans who lived farther south on the same peninsula. Under his leadership, a thriving community of farmers, teachers, and craftsmen worked side by side to build a better life for the community.

When believers in Christ work together in unity, their fellowship of faith provides spiritual light in the world’s darkness (Phil. 2:15-16). Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. . . . Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matt. 5:14-16).

The Mission Point Lighthouse warned ships of danger, but the original Old Mission Church provided spiritual direction to all who would listen. Believers do the same individually and through our churches. We are God’s lighthouse because Jesus lives in us.

You are called with a holy calling
The light of the world to be;
To lift up the lamp of the Savior
That others His light may see. —Anon.

Believers help the lost to find their way home when their life shines brightly.

Bowling with Chrysler

Hanging with Chrysler

Last night was a blast. Wait rewind..

Chrysler Group LLC came to North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University as the focal employer for Engineer's Week 2013: Celebrate Awesome. Chrysler LLC is one of the leading auto manufacturer in the industry. With the conglomerate of the Fiat, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Mopar Electronics, and the lovable SRT, Chrysler has emerged from the brink.

During E-Week, Chrysler conducted info sessions, enrichment seminars, and interviews in conjunction with A&T's Spring Career Fair to raise awareness about their internships, co-op, and company as a whole. Representatives were eager talk to the students of North Carolina A&T's College of Engineering. Organizations like the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), and the Institute of Electrical Engineering and Electronics (IEEE) were active in conversations with Chrysler to help bring internships to students.

But yesterday for two hours Chrysler met with A&T students for a fun night. At AMF Bowling Alley in Greensboro, North Carolina Chrysler hosted the best bowling night. There was free bowling, shoes, food, drinks, and exposure. Chrysler was not only present at AMF but they were sociable and were interested in knowing what made students want to work in the auto industry.

Throughout the night I met various representatives that all had great information about their company. I spoke with a Design Engineer named Xavier and his main function at Chrysler was the design and innovation of Bluetooth technology in Dodge vehicles. Anything that allows you to have hands-free functions in your vehicle goes through the hands of Xavier. He was great, but the best part was when he told me about taking his work home. The other representative that I spoke to was Becky. Becky was a recruiter looking for students with drive. She was telling me that even though I have high hopes in the Aerospace Industry, I could still have a role in the auto industry. I told her that I was interested in propulsion systems and she offered some great advice about joining the auto industry. She told me that engines, whether in aerial vehicles or cars, function under the same principles, so why not explore that entity. I enjoyed talking to this woman because she made me think that the auto industry isn't so bad. Don't get me wrong, my heart lies in the sky, but I might consider tinkering with the auto industry.

Long story short, I had a great time. The bowling was great my friends had a fun too. The even handed out USB drives, headphones, info cards and booklets for our benefit. It was great turn out, but the best part was leaving AMF and seeing the representatives cars. The all had 2013 models like the Dodge Charger SRT with 22'' chrome alloy rims, the Challenger SRT, and the Dart it was awesome too see. This was great event and I hope to see something like this in the future for Engineer's Week at North Carolina A&T State University because last night was a blast.

Poem on Song

I hope you guys enjoy this:

Some nights I will be here. I'm half way there so put your troubles aside and start living. Everyday I bring the sun around and I know it gonna be a lovely day. You know what I mean, like a cop car I got the moves. It doesn't matter what I did because I will never forget what was said and done. Don't you understand you're not working hard. Its my time, watch me crack my batman. Stop, now think about it, nothing even matters. But I gotta feeling that you don't care. So everybody clap ya hands, that was quite a show but its over now cause I'm all tied up inside.

Growing up in Spanish Harlem somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me but I partied like a rockstar all night long. Around my way, I'm under a spell and I'm in over my head but never mind the nights I had to cry because you never let me go inside. But I'm focused because I wanna make a change and I wanna fight. I'm different and that make me larger than life so put on your dancing shoes and lets groove tonight. I know we'll be together again cause every where I go, every smile I see, I know you are there smiling back at me.

Let me tell you something, don't you worry about a thing tonight you got me right where you want me. I hope that I feel this way forever, hope that its me and you together but the show goes on. I'm beggin you shake it off cause I am in misery; it's over. But you don't have to read my mind I'm all out of love but there is a God that walks over the Earth. Even if the sky is falling down, I know it ain't easy to smile and hide the pain but just dance it'll be okay. I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling, I gotta make you understand that this is something I gotta do but look at me now, I'm gettin' paper cause I'm out here grindin the books.

**As a Disclaimer: This poem has phases from 52 songs. See if you can figure out the songs used. Leave some guesses, you never know what you might win.

E-Week 2013

Engineer's Week 2013

Its that time of year again, the third week of February, Engineer's Week. Engineer's Week was set in motion by the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1951 in conjunction with President George Washington's birthday. Why George Washington's birthday you ask? Well, Washington, a gentleman farmer of inherited wealth and limited formal education, acquired credible surveying skills early in life, but excelled as a manager, strategist, and leader. Throughout his lifetime he directed a growing nation toward technical advancements, invention, and education. He promoted construction of roads, canals, the Capitol, docks and ports, water works, and new efforts to extract coal and ores and develop manufacturing resources. Washington's efforts made him American's First Engineer and his work fell under the Civil Engineering discipline, but since George Washington many new branches have been spread. The Engineering family has grown to encompass Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Chemical, Computer, Architectural, Biomedical, Biological, Aerospace, Marine, and many more. The field of engineering is very extensive and will continue to grow with the advances in technology.

I might be biased but Mechanical Engineering is the way to go because it is the most versatile. Being in Mechanical Engineering allows you to learn what all disciplines are about. It is great. But lets talk about E-Week. Engineer's Week was intiated to highlight a time for engineers to emphasize the importance of learning math, science, and technical skills. However, this is not a just a time to educate, but to publicize the contributions made in the field. My illustrious university, North Carolina A&T State University of Greensboro, North Carolina is doing it up big with a full week of programs for students, faculty, and staff of the College of Engineering. We kicked of E-Week with a Ceremony given by Dean of the College of Engineerig Robin Coger and will end with a community outreach program on Saturday. This year Engineer's Week 2013 theme is "Celebrating Awesome."The highlight events through the week include the Spring Career Fair, the Order of Engineers Ceremony, and the PCI Event: Introduce a Girl to Engineering. This week is the second most hype time at A&T (second only to #GHOE).

Personally, I will be taking advantage of all the activities E-Week 2013 can throw. Today I will be attending a Beyond the Classroom Invitation-only session. It will be about how to increase your competitiveness through Undergraduate Research and Fellowships. I can't wait. We have tons of people coming to be apart of something great. If you're in the Triad this week, come on by A&T, McNair Hall, and party up with some Aggies and maybe you'll get a taste of the one and only Aggie Pride.

Hello everyone I hope you had a great Valentine's Day and enjoyed your weekend. As you know, today is Tasty Treat Monday so lets kick this week off right. Today, I have a great recipe for you cake and ice cream lovers; have you ever mixed ice cream and cake before? Well this Ice Cream Cake recipe will surely satisfy. This is easy, quick, and full of flavor.

You will need:

  • 1 (18.25oz) package of chocolate cake mix
  • 1/2 gallon of ice cream, softened
Directions
  1. Prepare cake according to package directions; bake in a 9x13 inch baking dish and cool completely.
  2. Use ice cream that comes in a rectangular carton. Remove the carton and, using a piece of string or dental floss, cut the ice cream in half lengthwise (long side to long side) and place the two layers side by side on a piece of waxed paper.
  3. Place the cooled cake over the ice cream. Trim the cake and ice cream so that the edges match.
  4. Place a board or serving platter over the cake, hold onto the waxed paper and board, and flip the ice cream cake over. Remove the waxed paper and smooth out the seam between the ice cream slabs.
  5. Cover with waxed paper and freeze until very firm. Decorate as desired.
