How-To Make Fleece Tie Blankets By: Bayside Scoop
Thank you for stopping by, but this page is for those that want to pick up the hobby of making Fleece Tie Blankets. From "Enjoying Fleece Tie Blankets" you already know the history about how fleece materials came about so my job now is to take you from a pile of materials to wonderful blankets.
First You Will Need
Fleece Material
Fabric Shears (Either fabric shears or regular scissors will work, but the shears are preferred.)
Clips (I like double prong clips because they work the best and are cheap but clothes pins are great too.)
Cardboard square
Directions
Purchasing Materials:
The first step is selecting your fleece fabric. Since you have to get a top layer and bottom layer you can be creative with your selection. My favorite store for my fleece tie blankets is Hancock Fabrics. Hancock Fabrics is the one-stop shop for all your creative needs. It has the wide selection of fleece fabrics and also your supplies like the shears and other great tools. I suggest Hancock Fabrics because they are very affordable and always have sales going on for their materials.
Once you selected your material, get it cut to the size of its new owner (depending on whom your making the blanket for, the amount of material varies. My rule of thumb is Children 3 and under get 1 yard of material and everyone else gets 2 yards.) Don't forget to grab a pair of shears if you do not have a pair. I stated before that regular scissors are okay, but it is tougher to cut the material due to its thickness.
If you do not have any clips at home, then try your town beauty shop, Sally's Beauty Supply is great (I was lucky because my mother is a beautician so I had clips.) But still clothes pins work well also.
Creation:
Now here is the fun part, after you purchased all your supplies, find a large, quiet area where you can spread out the material. Then take your fleece materials and place one face-down on the floor (this is said to have the wrong side up, the side that looks faded in comparison to the other side) and the other right side up on top of it.
Next you wanna make sure you have evenly cut pieces, so line up one side, using the clips to ensure that the fabric doesn't move that and cut the material to be even. After your materials are evenly cut, find your cardboard and cut it into a 4 inch by 4 inch square. Use this square to cut away the material from the corners so that you can form your blanket. After you cut away the material at the corners, take the shears and cut even fringes all around the material.
Tie it Together:
This is the longest part of the process but it is the best part because you get to see the blanket come together. Once your fringes are cut in the fleeces take the two fringes and tie an over hand knot to pull the two fleeces together. The over hand knot is right over left, then left over right and pull. Make sure that the bottom fringe ends up on top so that the both materials are present on both sides.
After all the fringes are tied, hold up your blanket and stretch it out. There will be ripping but the ripping is good. The blanket will not come apart but tugging on it will allow the blanket to take its shape. And that is it. You have made your very own fleece tie blanket. Congratulations.
I found the same video I used to help learn how to make these blankets. Take a look at it for some extra guidance. Come back on comment about your blankets, I can't wait to see them.
